Neck and Shoulder Pain – Ways to alleviate the pain
At one point or other, the majority people will suffer from bouts of neck and shoulder pain.
Most of the time, this kind of pain is muscular and is caused by certain activities or the behaviour of the person concerned.
Back and neck pain is a fairly common problem. It is one which can recur at various moments throughout your life. Hence, knowing what can cause it and the best methods of treatment is important.
With that in mind, below is a guide to coping with, and alleviating, shoulder and neck pain. (We’ve grouped the two together because often, these two types of pain are intertwined as the muscles in the shoulder and neck join up.)
Determine the cause of the pain
The first thing which you need to do when suffering from shoulder and neck pain is to determine the cause. If you have had an accident or injury recently, the pain could be linked to that.
However, if you haven’t injured yourself recently, then you may be unsure about the cause of this pain.
According to doctors, this type of pain is most common in people who work in office environments. The causes could often be caused by stooping over a computer and typing on a constant basis. It’s a form of repetitive strain injury which tends to get worse and worse over time.
Poor posture is another common cause of shoulder and neck pain. If you’re someone who stoops as they stand or walk, then this could cause severe pain in the shoulder and neck. Believe it or not, how you stand can have a big impact on the health of your muscles, especially those in your neck.
Sometimes the cause of this type of pain is due to a health condition, such as arthritis or osteoporosis. Other times it’s down to something simple, such as sleeping in a funny position or not using a pillow which is the right size and shape.
In this instance, treating the problem is simple: all you need to do is change your sleeping position or replace your pillow with the best pillow for neck pain.
Find ways to alleviate the pain at home
Once you’ve determined the cause of your shoulder and neck pain, or you’ve been to see a doctor or specialist and they’ve diagnosed you, the next step is to find ways to alleviate the pain.
There are methods which you can use to alleviate the pain you’re experiencing at home. You may need to seek help from a professional. However, first it’s worth trying the methods below, to see if they are able to help alleviate the discomfort that you’re feeling.
A great way to reduce pain and discomfort is with the use of heat and ice therapy. By placing a heat pad onto the affected area to help loosen up the muscle, you can reduce the pain.
You can alternate this with the use of an ice pack wrapped in a towel – ice will help to reduce swelling and inflammation, preventing discomfort. Many people find that heat and ice therapy is just as effective at reducing pain as painkillers.
Massage is another option which is worth considering.
Often pain in the neck and shoulder is caused by a muscle that is overly tensed, Or it could be due to a trapped nerve.
In these instances, massage therapy can be highly beneficial.
Not only can it help to reduce pain but it can also help to prevent the problem from recurring, that is if you undergo massage on a regular basis.
