How Bad Breath Tops 7 Deadly Sins
There is no reason for a person to have terrible breath if he or she practises proper oral care.
.
Brushing regularly with floride-free toothpaste, flossing, gargling with mouthwash, and regularly visiting the dentist should keep bad breath at a distance.
.
Be remiss in doing any of the above, and it’s highly likely that it’s other people who will be keeping their distance from you.
.
Now that may be a bit harsh, but there is no excuse for having bad breath if you have access to dental products and professional dental care.
.
Then again, some people have bad breath not because they don’t practice proper oral hygiene. It could be that they are suffering from certain medical conditions that cause bad breath.
.
Medical conditions which affect one’s breath
Most people think that bad breath is all in the mouth. While the breath that other people might smell comes from the mouth, it’s also true that the bad smell could come from other parts of your body, and is usually indicative of a particular medical condition.
.
Even if you brush and floss regularly and have regular check-ups with your dentist, it is still possible to still have bad breath if you are suffering from the health conditions listed below.
.
6 Possible underlying health challenges with Bad Breath as a symptom…
.
.
1. Cancer
Lung cancer, in particular, causes a breath odour so distinct that doctors can now use it to detect the illness early.
.
2. Cystic fibrosis
The breath that sufferers of the above condition have is often described as “acidic.” The same goes for those who have asthma.
.
3. Diabetes
Diabetes patients are more susceptible to tooth and gum problems, which, by themselves, can already cause bad breath. People with diabetes also tend to have higher ketone levels that make their breath smell like acetone or nail polish.
.
4. Dry mouth syndrome
Xerostomia or dry mouth syndrome also causes bad breath. People who take antidepressants, antihistamines, and hypertension medication tend to experience saliva shortage, which dries out the mouth.
.
5. Heart Disease
Bad breath is one of the biggest signs of gum disease, and there is a very close link between gum disease and heart disease.
.
Gingivitis is an early warning sign of cardiovascular problems, which is why you need to treat your gum issues to treat bad breath and prevent heart disease as well.
.
6. Kidney Disease
When a person’s breath smells like fish or urine, he or she may be suffering from kidney failure. That distinct fishy odor often shows up when kidney failure affects the respiratory system.
.
Practise Proper Oral Care
But if you’re perfectly healthy and your breath is still terrible, then the only reason you have bad breath is that your oral hygiene practices are far from being ideal.
.
In all likelihood, the food you eat is largely to blame. Garlicky food, fish, meat, dairy products, and many more can cause bad breath.
.
This is compounded if you’re not in the habit of brushing after eating.
.
If you can’t help what you eat, the best you can do then is practice proper oral care. Brush after every time you eat, or at least floss or gargle with mouthwash to remove any bits of food that might get stuck between your teeth.
.
And schedule a dental appointment at least twice a year. If you’re not suffering from any of the medical conditions mentioned above, practicing proper oral care should help you stay away from bad breath.
