Even if you love exercising, it’s not always easy to get motivated for your next workout. But you’ll probably have plenty of energy if you bring your furry friend along with you!
A workout with a pet is a great opportunity for both of you to bond, have fun and get some physical activity. This is why these are becoming more and more common among pet owners.
If you’re wondering how you can start including your pet in your workouts, here are three tips.
1. Check with a Veterinarian First
It’s recommended that people talk to their doctors before starting a new exercise routine, and the same rules apply for animals.
Even if your pet is in perfect health, you obviously want to make sure that they don’t injure themselves or get stressed out when you work out with them.
Take them to the vet like Gwynedd Veterinary Hospital for a checkup first and verify that they can handle a new type of exercise.
2. Keep Up With Your Pet
Humans are adaptable in terms of physical activity. You can train for endurance or maximum strength, and you can probably handle a variety of different workouts.
This isn’t necessarily true with pets. Cats are much more suited for sprinting than long-distance running, and different breeds of dogs will have much different energy levels.
Pick a workout that your pet is going to enjoy as much as you are. If you have a dog that can run for days, take them for a run.
If your pet is the sprinter type, try a game of active fetch where you both chase the ball. See if you can keep up with their energy. Chances are, if you extend your workouts until they’re tired, you’ll be getting a much more intense workout.
3. Try Fitness Classes for People and Pets
Yes, there are fitness classes you can take with your pet. These include boot camps where you work out while your pet works on obedience and pet yoga where you do certain poses with your pet.
Not only are these classes fun, but they give your pet the opportunity to be around other animals. This is great if you want to work on their social skills.
Gyms and parks are great for working out, but your pets can’t always go with you. If you haven’t tried hiking or backpacking, they are both a great way to get some exercise, experience nature, and spend some time with your furry friend.
While some trails may not allow pets, a vast majority do. Hiking can work out muscles you didn’t know you had, and give your pet a complete sensory experience. New places, new things, fresh air, and a healthy dose of cardio make for a great day out for you and your pet.
It may take a few workouts before your pet gets comfortable exercising with you, but it’s well worth the effort. You two will be enjoying yourselves and working on your beach bodies at the same time.
Don’t give up if your pet isn’t into the first workout you try, either. You may just need to pick something new.
