Dealing With Your Child Health Issues
5 Common but Scary Illnesses
A Parent’s Mini Guide
.
In general, it’s a good thing to boost children’s immune systems early in life for their later adult years.
.
But let’s not beat around the bush – when your child is sick, it can be agonising. And it’s also fair to say that some illnesses, however common, can be incredibly scary.
.
.
In our mini guide here, we’re going to take a look at 5 common health issues in children which may alarm you. Some are worthy of your fears, while others are easily manageable. Let’s take a closer look.
.
.
#1. The Flu
.
Children are susceptible to the flu more than any other age group other than senior adults.
.
As a parent, what’s the best course of action you can take for your child? It would be best to consult a pediatrician, healthcare practitioner/ medical professional who you trust, listen to his/her advice, then make an informed decision.
.
At the end of the day, the best course of action is always prevention.
.
.
#2. Hand-foot-mouth Disease
.
.
Children can pass it on from a simple cough or sneeze. This disease can also be transmitted through touch.
.
In nurseries and childcare settings, the coxsackie virus can spread like wildfire.
.
And, once it presents itself, the symptoms can be scary for both children and parents alike. Your child can develop painful sores in his mouth and throat, making it difficult for them to swallow food and drink.
.
Painkillers such as ibuprofen can help. You should avoid giving your infected child citrus fruits.
.
Encourage your child to drink as much as he can, even if he is in pain. Dehydration can come on in a big way. This by far more dangerous than the hand-foot-mouth disease itself.
.
.
#3. Acute Vomiting
.
If the vomiting episode is acute, make sure you see a doctor fast. It could be a sign of something like a concussion. Or it could be the underlying symptom of something serious.
.
Even if it is a simple case of vomiting, your child can lose a lot of water and electrolytes. Seek out help as soon as you can.
.
.
4. Strep Throat
.
.
Strep throat can come on quickly. If left untreated, itcan lead to fever, swollen glands, and abdominal pain. It is, however, easy to treat. Symptoms often start to appear in the evening.
.
It’s worth finding out where your nearest after hours pediatrics centre is. They will be able to start treating the illness straight away and give your child the relief he needs to start eating and drinking again.
.
.
#5. Croup
.
Croup is a nasty infection which leads to an incredibly sore throat. Your child will cough a lot – the cough often resembles that of a dog barking. While the cough can sound horrendous, it is a common illness in children and is quickly dealt with.
.
Again, the quicker you seek treatment, the better and faster the outcome will be for your child.
