Knee pain is no joke. Our knees are so important to our body. After all, they help us to bend our legs and move around during the day.
However, they are vulnerable to damage. Knees often have to take the full weight of our body weight when we run or jump.
Therefore, it’s likely you will suffer from some form of knee pain in your life, especially after exercising. However, if the pain is becoming more frequent, problems may be developing which you need to investigate.
Here are 3 surprising reasons why your knee might be in pain, and what you should do about it!
1. You are overweight or obese
Being overweight can cause many health issues for a person including heart problems. However, you might not realise what pressure it is causing to your legs. And, in particular, your knees!
Being overweight puts pressure on your joints and makes them have to work harder. It can then start affecting your mobility: walking or running might end up becoming too painful. You might also end up with swelling and pain which will also put pressure on your joints.
Therefore, if your knee is hurting, you should start attempting to lose some weight. It might mean you need to change your diet. You can speak to a nutritionist who will help you to enjoy healthier meals every day.
Additionally, you should also start exercising more to help you lose some weight. As we discussed previously, swimming is a great way to lose weight while helping any knee pain you are experiencing!
2. You are suffering from arthritis
If you are experiencing pain in your knee, it could mean that you are suffering from arthritis. The condition affects millions of people around the world. It tends to occur as we get older.
With arthritis, you may feel pain when you bend your legs. Iit may feel like your knees lock up and you can’t move.
If you are getting pain like this, visit your doctor who will confirm if this is the case. If it is arthritis, they might suggest pain relief to help you deal with it.
It may get worse over time and cause you a loss of movement that affects your daily life. If so, your doctor might recommend sending you to an orthopaedic surgeon. An orthopaedic surgeon will discuss options such as knee replacement with you to help you live a normal life.
If you don’t want to go down the surgery route, there are many knee replacement alternatives such as stem cell therapy.
3. You have been overworking your knees when exercising
A lot of us push ourselves at exercise and then regret working as hard later when we get knee pain.
To reduce the pain, you should give yourself a break from intense activity and ice your knee. However, if the pain continues, it might mean you have a knee ligament injury. These are common sports injuries which could be causing you a lot of grief.
To ensure you haven’t got a knee ligament injury or even dislocated your knee, head to the hospital for a scan to check what’s happening.
