There are many diets making their rounds, and one of them is a gluten-free diet. Many people who discover that they are allergic to gluten find it hard to imagine living a life without wheat.

However, if you do suffer from gluten allergy, it would be wise to avoid it altogether. You may develop a leaky gut due to this. The consequences are multiple, and can include (with time) degenerative illnesses like cancer and heart disease.

While the necessary change can seem drastic, it is very accomplishable. With care, you can ensure that your foods you do eat do contain the nutrition that you need. It is always prudent to supplement with premium nutrients, as in our 21st century world, we cannot always be sure to obtain all the nutrients we need from our food alone.

Here are five tips to living gluten-free.

1. Make Substitutions

There is really no need to get yourself all stressed up with this change. There are many grains which are naturally gluten-free. Buckwheat, corn, tapioca, quinoa, teff and amaranth are just a few of the possibilities.

For example, if your recipe calls for breadcrumbs, then try polenta crumbs instead. Rice noodles are a delicious substitute for different types of pasta made with gluten.

Think about using a lettuce leaf for a wrap.

2. Avoid Cross-Contamination

It can be very easy to cross-contaminate in the kitchen if other family members are not joining you in eating gluten-free.

Be sure to clean the kitchen completely between preparing gluten and non-gluten foods. Never use the same utensils to prepare both meals.  Store food in separate containers.

While it may seem like extra work, remember that even a little gluten can be harmful to your system.

One way to prevent inflammation should cross-contamination occur is to take an anti-inflammatory supplement.
Curcumin is great for this purpose as it calms down whole-body inflammation.

3. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are naturally gluten-free. Be careful, however, about pre-made products containing fruits and vegetables.

Salads, soups and stir-fries are all quick meals that can easily be prepared. Keep your diet interesting by buying fruits and vegetables in season.

4. Consider Your Beverage

Many different beverages contain gluten including ports and some beers. Most wines, however, contain no gluten. Be careful because some alcoholic drinks have a grain mash added for flavor or color.

Manufacturers are making many beers gluten-free. Make sure to look for products labeled gluten-free when shopping.

5. Read the Nutritional Profile

Living the Gluten-Free Life Today, many food companies provide nutritional profiles for almost every food found in grocery stores and other retail locations.

Make sure to read these profiles as some foods may have hidden wheat. It can be used in soups, candy, processed meats, flavored chips, condiments and many other places.

If you are new to living gluten-free, then make sure to check foods that you already have in the pantry. Get rid of those containing wheat so that you are not tempted to eat them.
