The Pilates Answer to A Healthy Life
.

Many people today are looking to implement a healthy lifestyle. They know that exercise is a factor in that effort.
.
Finding the right or best exercise is the challenge. We suggest that Pilates is the answer to healthy living and here is why.
.
To understand the Pilates method, it is important to know a little about its background. Joseph (Joe) Pilates developed the method in the early 1900s.
.
The foundation of his exercise system was established while imprisoned in a German internment camp. He understood the need for him and his fellow prisoners to exercise and move in order to maintain physical health. So he created a system of movements and led his fellow internees in a daily exercise using the program he created.
.
Eventually after being released from the camp, Joe went to the United States and opened his first studio. He began sharing his method, which he called Contrology, with the New York City Ballet and others.
.
Joe used his method to help his clients and dancers to heal from injuries, improve their strength and maintain their flexibility. It was largely because of his work with the women in the ballet that the method came to be known as a women’s exercise.
.
Today the exercise routine Joe referred to as Contrology is now known as Pilates and is taught in multiple studios around the world. Men are also moving past the stigma of the method being for women and experiencing the benefit of the work for themselves.
.
How does the Contrology system help to achieve good health?

The 6 Guiding Principles Are:
- Breath

The Benefits of Practising Pilates
With Pilates, the participant develops
- Core strength
- Flexibility
- Body awareness
- Increased Oxygenation of The Blood
- Decrease in stress and tension
.
Pilates is a low impact exercise that is easy on the joints. There are varying levels of difficulty that allow for beginning moves all the way up to advanced routines. Pilates also has variations of aerobic elements dependent on the routine performed.
.
The exercises can be performed on a mat using one’s body weight. Or, machines can be used with the practice with one of the most common being the reformer. With the reformer, springs are used to create resistance during the moves.
.
This exercise is practiced among many people today for a variety of reasons. Professional athletes and Olympians incorporate the work into their exercise regimen to help improve core strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility while working on coordination and muscle control.
.
.
According to Joe Pilates, “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”
.
There are many testimonies from people around the world as well that attest to the benefits of Pilates. Those who suffer from low back pain, joint and muscle aches, as well as tension, find those conditions are improved once they begin the practice. This is in part because Pilates develops better core strength, posture, and physical conditioning. It also improves one’s breathing technique.
,
There are additional serious health conditions that exist in the world today that put society’s population at risk. The statistics revealing the number of people impacted by these diseases and conditions, also show increases over time.
.
These figures make the state of society’s health and our future a major concern. Some examples of these conditions are below:
- Osteoporosis – by 2050, the worldwide incidence of hip fracture in men is projected to increase by 310% and 240% in women, compared to rates in 1990.
. - Cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of death, accounting for more than 17.3 million deaths per year in 2013, a number that is expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030.
. - Sedentary – less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week.
.
How can practising Pilates help to prevent and improve these conditions?
.
Regarding Osteoporosis, studies have shown that resistance training helps to reduce the In practicing this method of exercise, the participant develops cores strength, flexibility, and body awareness.
.
With the movement of Pilates, your blood is oxygenated, and stress and tension decrease. Regular exercise can help to decrease the risk of heart (cardiovascular) disease, and physical activity three times a week for 30 minutes a day alleviates a sedentary lifestyle.
.
Through the use of bodyweight exercises on a mat and machines using springs, Pilates provides the resistance training that can help reduce bone loss. Pilates is an exercise method that contributes in the fight against cardiovascular disease. And when practiced regularly helps the participant maintain a physically active lifestyle.
