Quitting Drug Addiction Alone ~ How to Navigate the pitfalls
Quitting drug addiction is never easy. And if you’re going it alone taking the cold turkey option, the process also becomes more risky and dangerous.
If you or someone you know has a drug problem and you are considering this option, there are some things you should know about it. The risks and dangers shouldn’t be ignored.
1. Physical Impact and Withdrawal
Quitting drug addiction always leads to the problem of withdrawal symptoms. These are manifestations of your body’s reliance on the drug that you’re no longer taking.
When you go cold turkey, you don’t have any medicines that can dull the edge of these side effects. And that can make them even more difficult to deal with. Things such as body aches, sweating, nausea, and diarrhea are very common withdrawal symptoms.
On top of that, a feeling of severe anxiety is usually felt as well. Which of these will be felt will depend on the individual; everyone reacts differently.
2. Inability to Sleep
One of the most stressful and damaging side effects when trying to ditch drugs is an inability to sleep. When you can’t get to sleep, it can have an impact on every other aspect of your life too. That kind of thing is not what you want to be dealing with.
The process of quitting drug addiction means that your body is being starved of the thing that it is addicted to. And this leads to a lack of sleep. Those long nights are often filled with a nagging desire to cave in and give up.
It’s one of the main factors that persuades people that it’s time for them to do exactly that.
3. Lack of Care Support
When you’re quitting drugs alone, you don’t have the support that you often need. It’s a messy and dangerous process.
Having some medical professionals by your side to take care of you can make it much safer and less painful. If you choose to go to a rehab centre to recover, you will have that vital support. But you won’t if you’re at home.
Many people don’t think that they’ll need much care support. They soon realise how difficult things will be when they start the process. So, think very carefully about what kind of support might be needed before the process is started.
4. Danger of Relapse
Ultimately, the big danger is that you won’t be able to recover in a way that’s sustainable. This is the major long-term risk that you will face when you try to overcome an addiction alone.
If you get into a habit of relapsing and quitting, all of this will have an impact on your body. All that initial determination and ambition that’s present when you start to quit can drain away very quickly.
It’s hard to stick to a cold turkey plan when you have to deal with all the physical problems that come with it. This is why the majority of people who try to quit drugs the cold turkey way relapse sooner or later.
