How to Stay Active as You Age!
5 Great Ways To Do Just That!
Stay Young and Fit in Mind and Body!
Staying active as you age is essential for your health. Not only does being physically active increase your life expectancy and reduce your risk for heart disease, stroke, and a host of other physical ailments…
.
It’s also been shown to help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and contribute to a healthier mind and better sense of psychological well-being.
Most professionals recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, and most people fall flat of that mark – regardless of age.
.
So if you’re looking for some fun, easy ways to stay active as you age, look no further. We’ve put together a list of some of the easiest, most fun ways you can get out there, get your heart rate up, and have a good time doing it.

Stay Active as You Age: Way #1
Get Out In Nature
.
Nature has some incredible effects on your body and mind – getting out of the house, breathing in fresh air, and getting in touch with the natural world is a wonderful way to increase your activity level.
.
You have tons of options – if you’re not too fit, a simple walk in the park is a great way to get your heart moving, and if you’re feeling a little more robust, a nature hike can be a great way to get a great workout and enjoy some beautiful scenery.
.
Check around your area for local parks, or make a day of it – plan a day trip to a state or national park. You’ll get in a ton of healthy physical exercise, and have a fun time doing it.

Go For A Bike Ride
Riding bikes aren’t just for kids. In fact, bicycles are an ideal method of transportation and healthy physical activity for aging adults.
Unlike running and other high-stress, joint-and-bone hurting exercises, a bicycle offers an impact-free exercise experience that can be as easy or hard as you want it to be.
.
If you’re just looking for a moderate activity workout, riding down a local bike trail or taking your bicycle to the grocery store can be a great way to get your activity level up.
.
And if you’re feeling more vigorous, getting into road racing and bike races can be a fantastic way to bring out your athletic side – no matter your age.

Try A New Sport
.
Sports are awesome, especially team-based sports – you get a feeling of community, camaraderie, and can have a fun time being physically active, all at once. And as you age, there’s no reason you can’t join local sports teams and exercise groups targeted specifically at older adults.
.
There are many sports you can try – water polo is popular with some very fit older folks, as it offers a fun, competitive sport that can be done without impact on the joints and bones, but it does require a high level of fitness. Other year-round options include badminton, racquetball, and tennis.
.
If you’re outdoorsy, you may also consider a sport like kayaking or canoeing – or even just fishing. Fishing is a great way to stay active outdoors – and wrestling that lake-trout can be surprisingly intense exercise.

Volunteer In Your Community
.
Activity doesn’t just have to mean exercise. Volunteering in your community is a fantastic way to keep active as you age, and stay connected to your community members while getting yourself active and being out of the house.
.
Whether you’re helping out at a community fundraiser, aiding other workers in a soup kitchen, or staffing a food pantry, you have an opportunity to connect with others while doing important work for those around you – which is a win-win.

Do Fun Activities With Family Members
.
Got hyperactive grandkids? Get them to your house, and have some fun. If it’s nice weather outside, consider a water balloon or water gun fight – these can be really fun ways to connect with your grandkids, and get some fun physical activity.
.
Scavenger hunts are also fun – and you don’t even really need to do any setup. If you’ve got some woods or a park nearby, you can just do a “nature” scavenger hunt.
.
Set up a list with unique leaves to find, animals to spot, and things to do on your walk or hike, and start checking them off as you come across them. Kids love the fun of paying attention to their surroundings, and checking off items from the list as they find them.
.
If you’re a physically active adult, the world is your oyster – you can do just about anything a younger person would do. So don’t stop with these activities. Start getting your fitness and activity levels up, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll start to feel young, strong, and capable again.
