Strong Fit and Healthy into Old Age – Here’s how to do it
As we age, our bodies naturally begin to slow down. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t maintain excellent health all the way through our lives.
We’ve heard of people at age 100 or over…and still running marathons! The better we look after our bodies, the odds are more in our favour of living a long and happy life.
Below are 5 ways we can stay strong, fit and healthy into old age.
Start Early in Taking Good Care of Your Health
The sooner you start taking care of your body and being conscious of your health the better.
Give up smoking, binge drinking and anything else you know to be bad for your body.
Cut out junk food and start nourishing your body with fresh produce, healthy whole grains and lean protein.
The right foods will help to protect you against certain illnesses, prevent cancer and even keep your mind sharp.
Make sure you’re getting the right vitamins and minerals that your body needs. For example, fractures as a result of bone weakening and osteoporosis can be prevented by ensuring you get enough calcium throughout your entire life- beginning in childhood.
It’s never too late to start, though. Even if you’ve not looked after yourself health-wise, cleaning up your diet and starting an exercise routine will help to prevent things from going wrong.
Seek The Right Help After An Illness
If you do experience a serious illness such as a heart attack, stroke or hip fracture, it’s important to get proper care afterwards.
This includes taking on board any advice from the doctor or hospital such as getting enough rest and taking medication properly. You could even book into a health rehabilitation facility. A centre like this will have medical staff on hand as well as the equipment and resources you need to get well again.
Find an Exercise Regime Which Suits You
Depending on your current state of health, it might not be advisable to jump right in at the deep end and ‘go for the burn’.
Health conditions such as painful joints or a bad back might mean certain exercises are off the cards completely.
So it’s important to find an exercise routine that suits you. That allows you to workout and keep fit without causing any pain or damage to your body.
You could go on walks, go swimming or try yoga. These are much more gentle forms of exercise but will still get your body moving. You could purchase some exercise equipment and work from home.
Things like stepping machines, for example, can be done while seated in an armchair but still give your legs a workout. If you’re not as mobile as you’d like, this can help to build strength and prevent health issues such as deep vein thrombosis.
If you’re unsure of where to start, your GP will be able to give you some invaluable advice. And will sure to be happy with the fact that you want to make a healthy change in your lifestyle! If you’ve not exercised properly in a while, it can be worth seeking medical advice first anyway.
