Very Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay
4 Utterly Mind-Boggling Ones
You may never have thought it!!!
.
You should also know that getting out of the habit of brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is one way to fast-track problems with plaque and tartar build-up, and the potential for toothache, tooth loss, and a visit to an emergency dentist.
.
You should have these things ingrained into your mind already, and hopefully, you will be taking the necessary steps to protect your teeth on a daily basis as a consequence.
.
However, there are several causes of tooth decay that might be surprising to you, and we are going to consider 4 of these below.

4 Very Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay
.
.
Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay #1:
Using over-the-counter teeth-whitening products
.
In an effort to maintain your pearly white smile, you might use teeth-whitening or bleaching products on your teeth on a regular basis.
.
However, if the enamel of your teeth has already eroded away, the overuse of some over-the-counter products can lead to tooth decay should they penetrate the nerve tissues in your teeth. So, before using any product, consult your dentist. He or she will recommend the products you should be using and will warn you against certain methods of teeth-whitening that you might already be using.
.
.
So, my suggestions are these:
- 1. Prevention is best: limit your consumption of foods which stain: examples include tea, coffee, fruit juices, red wine, coloured vegetables.
.
. - 2. When you drink juices or drinks which stain, use a steel straw. (Save the planet, and avoid plastic straws!)
.
. - 3. Don’t do this too regularly: Brush your teeth with activated charcoal and/or soda bicarbonate NOW and THEN, for a quick, mini whitening. These two can erode the enamel of your teeth if used with regularity, so don’t do it frequently.
.
. - 4. Accept that your teeth will not be perfectly white like those of film stars and celebrities. And it is OK, What these celebrities suffer to have such pearly whites, they will never tell you.
.

Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay #2:
Chewing on ice
.
.
However, chewing on ice can be damaging, as you might crack a tooth, and that can lead to an exposed nerve. That tooth will then be more prone to decay when eating other foods.
.
.
So, my advice is this:
Use crushed ice in your drinks instead of the teeth-destroying cubed alternative, or simply let it melt away before the enamel on your teeth does the same.
.
.
Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay #3:
Eating dried fruit
.
.
Experts suggest they offer more damage to your teeth than bars of chocolate as, because of their sticky textures, pieces of dried fruit are more likely to remain in your mouth for longer periods when they get stuck in the nooks and crannies of your teeth.
.
.
So, my advice is this:
- 1. Limit your consumption of dried fruit, to save your teeth. Additionally, apart from teeth, dried fruit is very high in sugar – fructose.
.
This is problematic for sugar spikes and high blood sugar, which can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other degenerative diseases. Sugar is sugar, and your body is not selective on type or brand. It’s all one and the same.
. - 2. When you eat dried fruit, rinse your mouth after you finish eating (but do not brush immediately – see #4 below). Slosh the water all around your mouth, in an effort to remove the sticky bits of fruit left on, and between, your teeth.
. - 3. Floss your teeth to remove bits of dried fruit between your teeth.
.

Surprising Causes of Tooth Decay#4:
Brushing your teeth immediately after eating
.
.
You need to be mindful when eating acidic foods, as you are in danger of pushing the acid into your tooth enamel should you brush immediately after eating. The corrosive effects of acid will then erode away the enamel and leave you more susceptible to tooth decay.
.
.
So, my advice is this:
Rinse your mouth out with water after eating, and wait around an hour before brushing your teeth. Your teeth and your dentist will thank you for it!
.
.
To protect your teeth, you know to avoid certain bad habits. These include the surprising suggestions I have given you here, so add them to your list of don’ts if you want to preserve your smile and avoid problems associated with tooth decay and toothache.
