Back Pain Cures Which Don’t Work
Be Aware of These 4

If you live with chronic back pain, you will probably want to do anything for some relief.
.
While there are certainly things that will help you, there are just as many “cures” that won’t do anything. In fact, some of them could make things worse.
.
.
Below are 4 so-called cures that won’t help your back pain!

Back Pain Cures Which Don’t Work
#1: Doing Nothing
It’s understandable if you want to lay in bed all day to “rest” your back when it hurts, but that is a very bad idea.
.
While you probably shouldn’t hit the gym for some heavy lifting, you should at least try to stay active when your back pain flares up. Physical activity strengthens your muscles, which will help stabilize your spine and lessen some of your pain.

#2. Touch Your Toes in the Morning
Even though we did say that you should remain active when you have back pain, one thing that you shouldn’t do is try to stretch and touch your toes in the morning.
.
You might think that the stretch is good for your back, but your spinal discs have almost certainly filled with water during your eight or so hours of sleep.
.
This makes them more prone to herniation if you try to bend down and touch your toes. If you must attempt this stretch, at least wait a few hours after you wake up first.

#3. Take NSAIDs
NSAIDs—or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs—are often used for general pain relief, but they often don’t touch lower back pain.
.
Medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin may provide some temporary relief from pain, but in many cases back pain is caused by herniated discs and other nerve problems that won’t respond to an anti-inflammatory drug.

#4. Sit-Ups
You would think that sit-ups would improve back pain by strengthening your core muscles, but the truth is that, while they’re good for tightening muscles, they force you to bend your spine in a way that can make your pain worse.
.
Instead of full sit-ups, try partial crunches to avoid putting too much strain on your bad back.
One of the most important things to remember when it comes to back pain is that it is often indicative of other problems.
.
If you experience chronic pain in your back that doesn’t improve or gets worse, don’t panic or get stressed out. Instead, make an appointment with an orthopaedist to learn treatments and exercises that will be more effective than the rumours and old wives’ tales that you may have heard.
